Cop Caught Logging Into Police Systems Without Permission
A Metropolitan Police officer has admitted guilt over misusing police databases and sharing secret info on WhatsApp with the public.
PC Matthew Olive, 26, who worked in the Professional Standards Directorate, pled guilty at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, March 7. He first appeared in court back in December.
Senior Officer Slams ‘Breach of Trust’
Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Smithson blasted Olive’s conduct:
“PC Olive abused his position, searching confidential police systems for his own interests and handing info to others. Our officers and the public expect sensitive information to be accessed only for proper policing. His actions damage the trust we’re working hard to rebuild.”
Journalist Named in the Mix
The court revealed that Olive shared the stolen info with freelance journalist Rebecca Tidy and a second individual, Ms Faye Louise Osmund-Smith.
It’s unclear if further probes are underway into how this leaked info was used.
Misconduct Hearing Looms
PC Olive now faces a misconduct hearing. If found guilty of gross misconduct, he could be axed from the force.
The Metropolitan Police has faced rising scrutiny over internal misconduct. This latest scandal piles on the pressure to restore public trust.
