Lorry Ploughs Through M60 Central Reservation, Six Vehicles Crash in Swinton Horror

Chaos erupted on the M60 near Swinton, Greater Manchester, after a lorry smashed through the central reservation and collided with six vehicles. The serious crash happened around 7pm on Thursday, sparking a major emergency response.

Major M60 Shutdown and Emergency Response

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the lorry crossed into oncoming traffic before crashing into the embankment and six other cars. The motorway was shut in both directions between junctions 15 and 16, causing severe delays.

“We are responding to a collision on the M60 motorway at junction 15 in Swinton involving an HGV crossing the central reservation into the opposite lane, before going into the embankment. The HGV crashed into six vehicles.” – GMP

Paramedics from North West Ambulance Service attended, treating several at the roadside. One person was rushed to Salford Royal Hospital, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue confirmed.

“Four people were assessed by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service, and one person is being conveyed to Salford Royal Hospital. Firefighters remain in attendance at this time.” – GMFRS spokesperson

Long Delays Expected as Investigation Continues

National Highways warned that at least one car broke through the central reservation barrier. Recovery and investigation efforts will keep the motorway closed until at least midnight. Drivers were urged to avoid the area due to heavy congestion.

Eyewitnesses described the chaos on social media. Suzanne Hayward tweeted:

“Massive crash on M60 between 14 and 15 clockwise. Lorry crashed through central reservation and has gone across motorway and down the embankment on clockwise side. Multiple vehicles, police in attendance. Huge tailbacks and lane closures anti-clockwise.”
