12-Day-Old Baby Dies at Southampton Tower Block
A heartbreaking case has come to an end in Southampton after a 12-day-old baby boy died at Millbrook Towers. Emergency services rushed to the tower on Windermere Avenue early on Saturday, 6 January 2024 following a medical emergency call.
Despite desperate attempts by paramedics and the air ambulance crew, the newborn—born just days before on Christmas Eve 2023—was pronounced dead at the scene.
Community Mourns with Heartfelt Tributes
The tragedy sent shockwaves through the local Millbrook community. Neighbours were left “speechless” and “devastated”. Flowers, teddy bears, and touching notes, including one reading “Fly High Baby Boy,” piled up outside the family’s flat.
No Charges: Investigation Officially Closed
Police swiftly arrested a 33-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man from Southampton, both suspected of causing or allowing the child’s death and neglect. The man was released without charge in May 2024.
Now, Hampshire Constabulary confirms no further action will be taken against the woman, formally closing the investigation after more than a year of extensive enquiries.
“This follows more than a year of extensive enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death. A file will be prepared for the coroner,” said a Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson.
Coroner’s Inquest to Uncover Final Cause
Next up, the coroner will hold an inquest to officially determine the baby’s cause of death. The process may lead to recommendations on child safeguarding and health services to prevent future tragedies.
