An arson investigation has been launched following a significant fire that broke out at a block of flats on Thurlow Street in Walworth during the early hours of this morning.
The Incident
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) responded to reports of a fire at 12:39am today, with ten fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters deployed to the scene.
HART” Teams and Three ambulances from the London Ambulance service along with a response officer were also sent to incident.
Crews from Old Kent Road, Peckham, Dockhead, and nearby fire stations tackled the blaze, which erupted on the eighth floor of the residential building.
One of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders was used to fight the fire from above, as firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the flames and prevent further damage to the building.
Emergency Response
Control Officers at the London Fire Brigade took the first of two emergency calls at 12.39am and quickly mobilised multiple crews to the location.
Firefighters are likely to be working through the night to bring the situation under control, with smoke billowing from the upper floors andout of broken windows.
Cause Under Investigation
The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but police have confirmed that an arson investigation has been launched. No injuries have been reported at this time.
Community Impact
Residents of the affected block have been evacuated as a precaution, and local authorities are working to support those displaced by the incident.
A spokesperson from the London Fire Brigade said:
“Our crews acted swiftly and effectively to bring the fire under control. We are now working closely with the Metropolitan Police to determine the cause of the blaze. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.”
