Huddersfield Man Jailed for Massive UK Phishing Scam
A 23-year-old from Huddersfield has been slapped with an eight-and-a-half-year prison sentence for masterminding one of the UK’s biggest phishing scams, the Metropolitan Police revealed today.
Phishing Platform Used by Over 2,000 Criminals Worldwide
Zak Coyne ran LabHost, an online criminal platform that let more than 2,000 fraudsters around the globe launch phishing attacks. The site mimicked trusted brands like banks, postal services, and healthcare providers to trick victims into handing over sensitive info.
Since 2021, LabHost sold phishing website templates that made it easy even for newbie crooks to steal personal and financial data. The scam is blamed for causing over £100 million in global losses.
Coyne pleaded guilty at 123.
Special officers offered tailored support to victims, many of whom had unknowingly handed over passwords, bank details, and ID info.
Authorities Praise International Teamwork
Commander Stephen Clayman, who led the probe, hailed the joint effort as fundamental to their success:
“This verdict reflects our relentless efforts to dismantle complex cyber networks and protect the public. The success of this operation lies in the strength of international partnerships.”
The Crown Prosecution Service, Europol, Cyber Defence Alliance, and Microsoft also emphasised the crucial role of cross-border collaboration in fighting cybercrime.
