Ex-Soldier Guilty of Running Over Amputee During Burglary Escape
An ex-soldier has been found guilty of killing an amputee by running him over with his own car while fleeing a burglary in Erith.
Errol Woodger’s Deadly Getaway
Errol Woodger, 38, from Belvedere, was convicted at the Old Bailey of manslaughter and robbery for the fatal hit-and-run of Marc Allen, 50, on 29 December 2019. Woodger, who served in Afghanistan, broke into flats on Peareswood Road before being confronted by Mr Allen, a resident using a prosthetic leg.
In a shocking twist, Woodger stole Mr Allen’s car keys and escaped in the victim’s grey Mercedes GLA. He then used the car as a weapon, speeding towards Mr Allen as he tried to stop the theft.
‘Used Vehicle as a Weapon’ – Witnesses Speak Out
Prosecutor Anthony Orchard KC told the court Woodger “used the Mercedes as a weapon,” revving the engine before striking Mr Allen at high speed. The victim was hurled onto the bonnet and over the roof, landing with a severe head injury.
“He slid down the back of the boot and his head went bang when it hit the floor. I heard his head crack—it sent a shiver through me. Whoever was in that car was intent on taking it, nothing was going to stop him.” – Neighbour Linda Rumsey
Mr Allen was rushed to King’s College Hospital but tragically died a month later without regaining consciousness.
Forensic Breakthrough Leads to Conviction
The stolen car was found two days later on the Isle of Dogs in east London. Woodger initially denied involvement, but new forensic evidence uncovered in 2023 – his fingerprints and DNA inside the vehicle – sealed his fate.
At trial, Woodger admitted being in the car but claimed he was just a passenger, blaming a now-deceased accomplice for driving. The jury rejected his story.
Criminal Past and Next Steps
Woodger, with 15 prior offences including robbery, was suggested by prosecutors to have stolen the car and tools to fund drug use. After seven and a half hours, the jury found him guilty of manslaughter and robbery but cleared him of murder. He clapped in the dock on hearing the verdict.
Judge Rebecca Trowler KC remanded Woodger in custody. Sentencing is set for 27 June.
Remembering Marc Allen & Community Shock
Marc Allen was known as a kind and determined man who lived independently despite his amputation, relying on a Motability vehicle – the same car that caused his death. His loss has rocked the community and intensified fears over vehicles being wielded as deadly weapons by violent repeat offenders.
