Harrow House Blazes to Ground After Power Tool Battery Sparks Inferno

A semi-detached home in Harrow Weald went up in flames on Saturday afternoon – and London Fire Brigade have fingered a faulty lithium-ion battery as the culprit.

Flames Erupt on Barchester Road

Just after 3.50pm on April 12, emergency services flooded Barchester Road after seven frantic calls about a raging fire. Four fire engines and 25 firefighters from Harrow, Northolt, and Wembley battled the blaze.

The fire was under control within an hour, but the house’s first floor was badly damaged. One man needed treatment at the scene from London Ambulance Service, though thankfully there were no serious injuries.

Lithium Battery Failure Sparks Fire

Fire investigators confirmed the fire was accidental, sparked by a malfunctioning lithium-ion battery inside a power drill.

“Lithium batteries store a significant amount of energy in a very small space. If that energy is released uncontrolled, it can cause a fire or explosion,” warned a London Fire Brigade spokesperson.

“These fires can be ferocious, with jets of flame hot enough to melt metal and release highly flammable, toxic vapour clouds. They are extremely tough to put out.”

Fire Brigade Issues Safety Warning

London Fire Brigade urged everyone to be extra cautious with lithium-powered devices like power tools, e-scooters, e-bikes, laptops, and phones.

“Always store and charge these devices away from living areas – ideally in garages or sheds. If indoors, ensure smoke detectors, shuttable doors, and clear escape routes are in place. Never charge in hallways or near exits.”

They also stressed buying batteries from trusted sellers and using the right chargers to avoid disaster.

This blaze is a stark reminder of the hidden dangers lurking in everyday gadgets powered by lithium-ion batteries. Handle with care!
