Neglect Leaves German Shepherd in Agony
Sheldon Moore, from Harold Avenue, Barnsley, has been slapped with a lifetime ban on keeping animals after neglecting his injured German Shepherd, Belle. At Barnsley Magistrates’ Court, Moore admitted causing unnecessary suffering by ignoring Belle’s broken leg and failing to get her vital vet treatment.
Missed Vet Appointments Spark Outrage
The court heard Moore missed six crucial vet visits over a month. These appointments were essential for X-rays and bandage changes needed to treat Belle’s fractured tibia. Despite the dog’s severe injury, Moore neglected her care and pain relief, leaving her in needless pain.
RSPCA Officers Faced Abuse and Resistance
RSPCA officers investigating the case reported Moore was uncooperative, swearing at them, missing interviews, and initially refusing to hand over Belle into their care. His attitude delayed Belle’s rescue and recovery.
Harsh Sentencing for Animal Cruelty
- Moore pleaded guilty to two Animal Welfare Act offences: causing unnecessary suffering and failing to meet Belle’s needs, including proper diet and pain management.
- He received an eight-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months and a concurrent four-week suspended sentence.
- The court imposed a lifetime ban on Moore keeping animals, plus eight days of Rehabilitation Activity, £200 costs, and a £154 victim surcharge.
“Animals are completely reliant on their owners to meet their needs, and when this trust is broken, the consequences can be tragic. We are pleased that the court recognised the seriousness of this case,” said an RSPCA spokesperson.
Belle is now in loving hands, recovering safely with the RSPCA.
