Police officers were left stunned after stopping a small Citroën Berlingo van packed with an astonishing 1,000 litres of diesel swishing around unsecured in the back.
Unexpected Discovery
The vehicle was pulled over during routine checks, and officers quickly realised the van was being used to transport a large quantity of fuel in highly unsafe conditions.
In a light-hearted statement, police said:
“Apparently, it’s perfectly normal to drive around in a little Berlingo van with 1,000 litres of diesel swishing away in the back… The driver is now helping us out with a few enquiries. Let’s hope he kept the receipts!”
Serious Safety Risks
Transporting such a large volume of fuel without proper containment measures presents significant dangers, including fire hazards, spill risks, and potential explosions in the event of an accident. Regulations require fuel to be carried in certified, secure containers with proper ventilation — none of which appeared to be in place.
? Driver Under Investigation
The driver was taken aside to assist police with further enquiries. Investigators are now working to determine:
-
Whether the fuel was legally obtained.
-
If the correct permissions and licenses were held.
-
Whether any further offences, including road safety breaches or environmental violations, were committed.
Fuel Thefts and Black Market Concerns
Incidents involving large quantities of diesel have risen alongside increasing fuel prices. Law enforcement agencies have been cracking down on fuel theft, illegal transportation, and black-market sales.
Authorities urge businesses and individuals to ensure they are compliant with fuel transport laws to avoid serious penalties and criminal prosecution.
