Smoke Alert in West Hougham as Waste Fire Rages Near Dover
Residents of West Hougham, near Dover, are urged to keep windows and doors shut as fire crews battle a stubborn waste fire that broke out on Monday evening, April 28.
Massive Fire Response to Toxic Smoke Plume
The fire, first reported at 6:08pm, sent thick smoke billowing over the area. Firefighters deployed six fire engines, a bulk water carrier, and a drone support unit to tackle the blaze. Wearing breathing apparatus, crews used high-pressure hose reel jets and main jets to contain the inferno.
Controlled Burn Continues Overnight as Watch Remains Tight
By 10pm Tuesday, April 29, the response was scaled back, but a single fire engine stayed on site overnight. Firefighters maintained a controlled burn and monitored flare-ups to prevent a fresh outbreak.
A Kent Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “We’ve made good progress, but as a precaution, we continue to advise anyone living nearby to keep their windows and doors shut, especially those with existing respiratory conditions.”
Firefighters Use Wetting Agents to Stop Reignition
Throughout Tuesday, crews applied wetting agents to dampen the waste and reduce flare-up risks. The operation was steadily reduced from six fire engines down to just one. The fire started on waste land, but firefighters kept a close watching brief overnight to ensure the flames stayed contained.
