Tragic Thames Death: 11-Year-Old Kaliyah Coa Drowned After Losing Shoe
Little Girl Swept Away in East London River
An inquest opened today into the heartbreaking death of 11-year-old Kaliyah Yeabselet Coa, who vanished in the River Thames on March 31. Senior Coroner Graeme Irvine revealed Kaliyah likely got caught in the current while trying to retrieve a lost shoe near a concrete slipway at Barge House Causeway, North Woolwich.
Following a massive two-week search, Kaliyah’s body was found on April 13 at Maritime Quay, close to Canary Wharf. Authorities confirmed her identity this week using dental records.
Cause of Death: Immersion, Not Drowning
The court heard that Kaliyah’s preliminary cause of death was “immersion” rather than classic drowning. Professor Alan Bates conducted the post-mortem at East Ham Public Mortuary and found no signs of foul play.
“Professor Bates indicated there was no evidence suggesting Kaliyah’s death was caused by the action or inaction of any other person,”
Coroner Irvine confirmed. Instead, cold water immersion was blamed for her tragic death.
Full Inquest to Address Key Questions
The full inquest, set for November 11, will probe crucial issues including:
- Was Kaliyah supervised by an adult at the time?
- Could Kaliyah swim?
- Were there missed chances to prevent her fatal accident?
- Could those managing the slipway and waterways bear responsibility?
“If the family have concerns about the death, I will listen carefully. Those responsible for the waterways may need to provide more information,” Coroner Irvine added.
Family Pays Emotional Tribute
Kaliyah’s family shared a poignant statement:
“Our hearts are broken and our lives will never be the same. We were blessed to have Kaliyah, even if it was for such a short time. She will be missed so much.”
Det Supt Scott Ware from the Metropolitan Police, who led the investigation, said:
“Our specialist officers will continue to support Kaliyah’s family as they process this heartbreaking news. We urge the public to respect their privacy and avoid speculation.”
