Fourteen Kids Arrested Then Freed Over Teen’s Death in Gateshead Blaze

Fourteen teenagers, including 11 boys and three girls, were arrested after 14-year-old Layton Carr was found dead in a fiery wreck at Fairfield Industrial Park, Gateshead. All have now been released on police bail.

Tragic Discovery After Two-Hour Firefight

Emergency services raced to the scene at around 8pm on Friday night, battling flames for two hours as a major incident was declared. Police had issued a desperate missing persons alert for Layton, last seen an hour before the blaze.

Tragically, Layton’s charred body was found inside the burnt-out building. His family was informed of the heartbreaking news.

School Mourns ‘Bright Light’ Layton

Layton’s headteacher, David Thompson, paid a heartfelt tribute:

“Our school is heartbroken. Layton was a bright light in Year 9 and a valued, much-loved member of our community. He will be missed beyond words.”

At the industrial park gates, blue balloons shaped as “14” and dozens of floral tributes have been left. One message read:

“Rest in paradise Layton, always in our hearts. Fly high with the angels. Love you forever.”

Community Outraged Over Long-Standing Safety Concerns

Local councillors revealed they had repeatedly raised worries about anti-social behaviour and safety risks at Fairfield Industrial Estate and surrounding derelict sites. They had contacted Gateshead Council, Securitas, and emergency services in recent months.

Investigation Underway, Police Call for Witnesses

A Northumbria Police spokesman said:

“All those arrested have since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.”

Detective Chief Inspector Louise Jenkins added:

“This is an extremely tragic incident where a boy has sadly lost his life. We are committed to finding out exactly what happened.”

A police cordon remains as forensic teams scour the scene. Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Susan Dungworth offered condolences and urged anyone with information to come forward.
