Firefighters battle blaze at busy pier
A 43-year-old man was hauled in on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after a fire tore through Erith Pier at around 5pm on Friday, 9 May. Emergency services scrambled to the scene in south-east London, where the London Fire Brigade quickly brought the flames under control.
Luckily, no one was hurt in the dramatic incident, but the potential for catastrophe was high.
Investigation underway into fire’s cause
Police and forensic teams are combing through the scene over the weekend to figure out how the blaze started. So far, officers have not confirmed if the fire was deliberately set or accidental.
“We are treating this incident seriously due to the potential risk to public safety. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the consequences could have been far worse,” a Met Police spokesperson said.
