Residents Urged to Shut Windows as Massive Fire Sends Smoke Across Gravesend

Crews Battle Blaze at Recycling Site as Smoke Disrupts Gravesend Town Centre

Residents in Gravesend town centre have been urged to close windows and doors after a large fire erupted at Northfleet Mill, a recycling centre on Crete Hall Road, in the early hours of Monday.

The Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) confirmed that six fire engines are currently on scene, with crews working tirelessly to extinguish the flames using main water jets.

Smoke Plume Spreads Over Town

The fire has produced significant plumes of smoke, which are drifting across the Gravesend town centre, prompting urgent public health advice.

A KFRS spokesperson stated:

“Crews are advising people living or travelling in Gravesend town centre to close their windows and doors. This area is currently being affected by the large plume of smoke in Northfleet at the Crete Hall Road incident.”

Firefighters remain on-site, making what the service describes as “good progress” in tackling the blaze.

Emergency Services on High Alert

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, and there are no current reports of injuries. Emergency responders, including a bulk water carrier and specialist vehicles, are continuing operations as smoke continues to impact nearby areas.

Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid the area, and follow updates from Kent Fire and Rescue Service via official channels.
