Emergency crews are battling a massive fire that broke out early Monday morning at Northfleet Mill recycling centre on Crete Hall Road. Residents in Gravesend town centre have been told to shut windows and doors as thick smoke engulfs the area.
Smoke Plume Chokes Gravesend Town Centre
Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) deployed six fire engines to tackle the inferno using main water jets. The fire has sent a large plume of smoke drifting over Gravesend, causing serious disruption and health concerns.
A KFRS spokesperson said: “Crews are advising people living or travelling in Gravesend town centre to close their windows and doors. This area is currently affected by the large plume of smoke from the Northfleet fire on Crete Hall Road.”
Firefighters remain on scene, making “good progress” as they work to extinguish the blaze.
Emergency Services on Full Alert
The cause of the fire is still unknown. So far, no injuries have been reported. Additional emergency vehicles, including a bulk water carrier and specialist units, continue to support firefighting efforts as smoke pollution spreads.
Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid the affected area, and watch official updates closely.
