Drama at Beachy Head: A car plummeted off the famous cliff this afternoon sparking a huge emergency rescue operation.
Driver Trapped After Cliff Crash
Emergency services were scrambled at around 4:30pm after reports a vehicle had gone over the cliff edge at Beachy Head and landed near the shoreline. The driver, believed to have attempted suicide, survived the terrifying fall but remains trapped in the wreckage, which is partly submerged in water.
Massive Multi-Agency Rescue Underway
The rescue mission involves Eastbourne RNLI lifeboat crews, HM Coastguard teams, fire fighters, and specialist cutting teams working together to free the driver. Eastbourne RNLI described the launch as an urgent mercy mission. Fire crews are coordinating with technical teams both on the cliff top and below to stabilise the scene.
Area Locked Down – Public Told to Stay Away
Beachy Head, though a stunning coastal hotspot, is notorious for accidents and serious incidents. Authorities have cordoned off the cliffs and coastal paths. The public is strongly urged to avoid the area while the sensitive rescue continues.
A Coastguard spokesperson said: “This is an ongoing and sensitive rescue operation involving a person in a critical situation. We are doing everything we can to safely recover the individual.”
Rescue Efforts Continue – Driver’s Condition Unknown
As of 7:45pm, the driver remains trapped while crews work to stabilise the vehicle and reach the casualty. No updates on the driver’s identity or condition have been released.
