Chaos at West Wittering: Over 40 Children Reported Missing in One Day!
Emergency services in West Sussex faced a frantic 21 June as they battled through one of the summer’s busiest days. The Coastguard confirmed tackling more than seven emergencies, including a shocking 40+ missing children scare at West Wittering Beach alone.
Rescue Teams Race Against Time
The Littlehampton Coastguard joined forces with the Selsey and Hayling Island Coastguard Rescue Teams, Sussex Police, the RNLI lifeboat crews, and lifeguards during the chaotic day. Their quick action covered a range of incidents — from swimmers in trouble to urgent medical cases and even managing helicopter landings in Chichester.
“It’s estimated that over 40 children were reported missing throughout the day on just one beach,” said a spokesperson for Littlehampton Coastguard. “Thanks to rapid response and cooperation with lifeguards, many were quickly reunited.”
Beach Safety Tips to Keep Kids Safe
With soaring temperatures luring crowds to the coast, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency has blasted out fresh beach safety advice to stop any more missing child nightmares.
- Grab a free wristband from lifeguards or local councils and write your phone number on it — a simple lifesaver for quick reunions.
- Snap a selfie of your child at the start of the day to easily spot their outfit and face.
- Pick a meeting point like a lifeguard hut or flagpole in case anyone gets lost.
- Dial 999 in emergencies – Always ask for the Coastguard and alert lifeguards nearby.
The Coastguard warns beachgoers to stay alert with more heatwaves on the way. Keep your family safe and don’t let a fun day turn into a panic.
