Dispersal Orders Extended Across Thanet to Combat Rising Antisocial Behaviour

Default Heading H1

Dispersal orders will remain in place across Thanet this weekend as Kent Police respond to a rise in antisocial behaviour in Broadstairs, Margate, and Ramsgate.

The orders follow a week of underage street drinking, fights, and aggression towards staff at shops and restaurants, with several incidents reported between Thursday 19 June and Saturday 21 June.

Under the dispersal powers, police can direct individuals aged 10 or older to leave designated areas if they are suspected of causing nuisance or disorder. Those who return within a set timeframe risk arrest and further police action.

Five Arrests and Alcohol Seized

Over the past weekend, five people were arrested, including one teenager charged with assaulting a police officer. Kent Police also confirmed they had spoken to the parents of five young people, issuing formal warnings about antisocial behaviour.

A Community Protection Warning was handed to one girl, placing strict conditions on her movements and conduct to prevent repeat incidents.

Officers have also seized alcohol from underage drinkers during patrols.

Coordinated Policing Effort

Kent Police are working with British Transport Police, Thanet District Council, and other policing teams across the county to prevent further disorder, including from individuals travelling into Thanet from neighbouring towns.

Dispersal orders covering Broadstairs, Margate, and Ramsgate town centres and beach areas will now remain in effect through Sunday afternoon, 29 June. Police say the orders may be renewed or expanded if further issues arise.

Police Statement

Chief Inspector Ian Swallow, Thanet’s District Commander, said:

“While it may be a small number of offenders, we understand the impact their behaviour can have on the community and it will not be tolerated.

“We urge parents to speak to their children and remind them to behave responsibly. We’ve confiscated alcohol from children and are visiting parents to discuss their child’s conduct.

“These measures are about keeping Thanet safe. We will continue high-visibility patrols and encourage the public to report any crime or disorder.”

What You Need to Know

To report antisocial behaviour, call 101 or use Kent Police’s online reporting tool. In an emergency, always dial 999.
