A man in a wheelchair was arrested outside West Croydon Station on Tuesday evening (1 July) following a disturbance that drew a large crowd, prompting the deployment of additional police units.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers responded to reports of a disturbance involving a male suspect, who was subsequently arrested for assaulting an emergency worker.
While police have not officially confirmed the nature of the assault, eyewitnesses and reports on social media suggest the man was spitting at officers.
Crowd Gathers at Scene
As officers attempted to carry out the arrest, an extremely large crowd gathered, some reportedly shouting at police and recording the incident. For public safety and officer support, additional units were called to the scene.
A Met Police spokesperson said:
“Officers responded to a disturbance outside West Croydon Station on Tuesday. A male in a wheelchair was arrested on suspicion of assault on an emergency worker. Additional officers attended due to a large crowd forming.”
The suspect was taken into custody. No injuries to police or members of the public have been reported.
Appeal for Calm
Authorities are reminding the public to allow officers to carry out their duties safely and without interference. Police say footage of the incident is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
