Emergency responders remain at the scene of a major gas leak in south-east London which led to the overnight evacuation of around 100 residents.

New Cross Road is currently closed in both directions between Florence Road and Deptford Bridge after a suspected gas leak was detected late last night (July 9).

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that around 100 people were evacuated from nearby homes and businesses as a precaution amid concerns over a potentially hazardous gas concentration in the area.


Road Closures and Travel Disruption

As of 7:30am on July 10, New Cross Road remains shut, with significant traffic restrictions in place.

  • Eastbound traffic is permitted from Deptford High Street
  • Westbound access past Deptford Bridge is completely blocked

Transport for London and local authorities are advising motorists and commuters to avoid the area, warning that disruption may continue through the morning peak.


Fire Brigade Statement

In an official alert, the London Fire Brigade stated:

“Firefighters are responding to a suspected gas leak on New Cross Road.
Around 100 people have been evacuated from the immediate area as a precaution and road closures are in place.
Disruption is expected to last through the night. Please avoid the area as crews respond.”


Witnesses and Community Response

Local residents reported smelling gas late on Wednesday evening before emergency services arrived. One witness described the scene as “calm but tense”, with emergency crews moving quickly to secure the area and guide people to safety.

There are currently no reports of injuries.
