Man in His 80s Dies in Bromley House Fire as Investigation Launched

A man in his 80s has tragically died following a house fire in Bromley on Tuesday evening, with emergency services rushing to the scene in Bishops Avenue shortly before 6pm.

Despite the efforts of London Fire Brigade, Metropolitan Police, and the London Ambulance Service, the elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene. A second man, aged in his 50s, was treated for smoke inhalation and remains in hospital.


Fatal Blaze in Semi-Detached Property

The fire broke out in a semi-detached residential house, severely damaging half of the ground floor, according to a statement from the London Fire Brigade.

The brigade was called at 5.46pm, and the fire was under control by 6.18pm. Four fire engines and approximately 25 firefighters from Beckenham, Sidcup, and Old Kent Road stations attended the scene.


Police and Fire Brigade Statements

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed:

“A man, aged in his 80s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin are being supported by specially-trained officers.
Another man, aged in his 50s, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital. We await an update on his condition.”

“Investigators are making enquiries to determine the cause of the fire.”

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson added:

“Sadly, a further man was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.”

Investigation Ongoing

At this stage, the cause of the fire remains undetermined, and both the Met Police and fire investigators are continuing to examine the scene.

The identity of the deceased has not been released, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted in due course.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said:

“We were called at 5.48pm yesterday (22 July) to reports of a fire in Bishops Avenue, Bromley.
“We sent an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars and an incident response officer to the scene.
“We treated one patient and took them to hospital as a priority. Sadly a second person was found dead at the scene.”
