Thousands of Santander Bikes Grounded Across London After Software Fiasco
London commuters were left stranded today as a major software glitch knocked out thousands of Santander Cycles. Docking stations, key fobs, the official app, and website all went down early Tuesday morning, leaving users unable to access the iconic red bikes.
Commuters Fuming Over No Warning
The chaos kicked off in the early hours and has dragged on all day, disrupting the commutes of countless Londoners who rely on the service. Transport for London (TfL) admitted the outage was caused by “planned software upgrades overrunning” — but gave no clear timeline for fixes.
“Just been to a dock and fobs aren’t working on manual or pedal bikes. App not loading and website doesn’t let you sign in. Tried again at 7:15am — still nothing,” complained one furious user on social media.
Many slammed TfL for failing to alert customers ahead of the meltdown, especially during busy August travel season.
Engineers Scramble to Get Bikes Back on the Road
TfL says engineers are working “at pace” to fix the mess. Some key fob users report limited access to bikes at certain docks, but the majority remain offline.
In a midday email to users, TfL said:
“Due to planned software upgrades overrunning, Santander Cycles are currently unavailable to hire. We’re sorry for the disruption caused. We’re working hard to restore services as soon as possible and will let you know when our cycles are available again.”
London’s Beloved ‘Boris Bikes’ Left in the Garage
The Santander Cycles scheme, launching as Barclays Cycle Hire in 2010, is a London institution. With over 12,000 bikes and hundreds of docking stations, these “Boris Bikes” are a familiar sight for commuters and tourists alike.
The introduction of electric-assist e-bikes boosted their popularity in recent years, making today’s outage an even bigger headache.
Calls Grow for Better Communication
Frustrated users want TfL to up its game on alerts and real-time updates. The outage comes at a peak time when many count on bike hire for last-mile journeys.
A TfL spokesperson told UKNIP:
“We’re very sorry for the disruption caused to Santander Cycles this morning. This is due to planned software upgrades overrunning and we’re working hard to restore services as soon as possible.”
What’s Next for Stranded Riders?
For now, no firm date has been given for the full return of Santander Cycles. Riders are urged to keep an eye on TfL’s website and social channels for updates.
