Tragic Car Blast at Rainbow Bridge: Couple Dead in Fiery Crash
Police have named the victims of a horrific car blast at the Rainbow Bridge border crossing between the US and Canada. Kurt and Monica Villani, both 53, died after their car soared through the air and crashed near Niagara Falls.
Speed and Fireball Shut Down Four Border Crossings
The crash happened just before American Thanksgiving, one of the busiest travel days. The Villanis, who lived 10 miles south of the site in Grand Island, New York, owned a local chain of hardware and lumber stores.
Their old Bentley sped uncontrollably, cleared an 8ft fence on the New York side, then burst into flames. Authorities say the charred wreckage was reduced to the engine; even the number plate was gone.
No Terror Links, FBI Confirms
A US border agent was hurt in the blast. New York Governor Kathy Hochul ruled out terrorism, and the FBI confirmed no explosives or terrorist ties were found. The cause remains unknown, with mechanical failure among the possibilities being probed.
The Rainbow Bridge was closed for two days, snarling traffic on one of the busiest travel days. Thankfully, other nearby crossings have reopened.
Family Thanks Supporters as Investigation Continues
The Villani family issued a statement expressing heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of support as authorities dig deeper into the baffling tragedy.
