Major Heath Fire Declared at Holt Heath Near Wimborne
A massive fire has broken out at Holt Heath near Wimborne, sparking a major incident alert. Thick smoke plumes are visible across Dorset, forcing a robust emergency response from fire crews and partner agencies.
Smoke Seen Across Dorset
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the blaze started early this afternoon. Firefighters, including specialist wildfire units, are battling the fast-spreading fire fueled by strong winds. The fire covers roughly 1,000 by 800 metres.
Residents across Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole (BCP) report a towering column of smoke. It’s visible from Poole Harbour, Brownsea Island, Bournemouth town centre, and as far as Studland.
Authorities have urged locals to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed to avoid heavy smoke inhalation.
Evacuations and Firefighting Efforts
- Twenty homes near the fire front have been evacuated as a precaution.
- Fire crews from Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Somerset, and Devon are on scene.
- Units from Devizes, Pewsey, Salisbury, Wilton, and Trowbridge have joined the fight.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Darren Langdown said:
“We have declared a major incident due to the fire’s size and the impact on our resources. We thank neighbouring services for their support and praise all our staff working tirelessly in tough conditions to control these fires.”
Public Safety Warnings & Ongoing Risks
Langdown warned the public to stay away from the area as conditions could change quickly, trapping people. He also urged drone operators to keep away—emergency teams are using aerial drones to coordinate the firefighting effort.
The cause of the Holt Heath blaze is unknown, but a nearby Newton Heath fire—burning since last Sunday—is suspected to be deliberate.
With an amber wildfire alert active amid hot weather, fire bosses urge the public to avoid barbecues, open flames, and to dispose of cigarettes responsibly.
If you spot a wildfire, call 999 immediately, move to safety, note the location, and meet firefighters at the nearest access point.
