Reckless Driver Wrecks Level Crossing Causing Chaos
A brazen motorist ignored flashing warning lights at an automatic level crossing between Rye and Ashford International, smashing vital control systems and sparking major disruption across rail and road networks.
Damage and Delays Hit Transport
The reckless stunt unfolded at around 9pm on Tuesday when the driver risked a near-miss with oncoming trains by rampaging through closing barriers. While a collision was narrowly avoided, the crossing mechanism was severely damaged.
Traffic chaos around the site prevented engineers from reaching the scene promptly. Repairs have been delayed, and the barriers are still out of commission. All lines through the area remain closed, bringing train services to a standstill.
Train Services Suspended
- Services from Eastbourne to Ashford International now terminate at Rye before heading back.
- No trains run between Rye and Ashford International in either direction. Appledore and Ham Street stations are also affected.
Replacement buses have been organised, but road congestion near the crash site will slow down journeys significantly.
Passengers are advised to use Southeastern services between Hastings and Tonbridge, and Tonbridge to Ashford International, though these trains skip Rye, Appledore, and Ham Street stations. Southern Rail warns travellers to expect at least 60 minutes extra on their journeys.
Road Closures Add to the Mayhem
Roads near the crossing remain shut for safety reasons, worsening local traffic problems. Police have yet to confirm whether the reckless driver has been caught or identified.
