A man in his 50s has died and six others were rushed to hospital after a suspected gas leak at a takeaway in Bloxwich, West Midlands.
Emergency Services Race to Scene
Police and paramedics scrambled to Cresswell Crescent on Friday night after a welfare concern was raised. When they arrived, a man in his 50s was found dead at the scene.
Seven others, including emergency workers, showed signs of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Several were treated on site and taken to hospital for further checks.
Nearby Homes Evacuated, Residents Return
Neighbours were evacuated as a safety precaution. Thankfully, residents were allowed back into their homes by the early hours of Saturday after safety checks passed.
Local councillor Michael Coulson confirmed the incident happened at a takeaway shop in the Mossley shopping area. Firefighters initially struggled to access the building due to a generator emitting dangerous gases.
Police Launch Full Investigation
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We attended the business premises at around 9.40pm following concerns for the welfare of a man.”
“Sadly, a man in his 50s was confirmed dead. Seven others, including emergency service workers, were treated for suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Some required hospital assessment.”
“Nearby homes were evacuated but occupants have since returned. We will work with the Health and Safety Executive to establish the full circumstances.”
Community in Shock
Councillor Coulson shared on social media: “I visited the scene after the tragic fatality. Residents were allowed back at about 3am, and shops are open this morning. There is now only a small police presence.”
“I had recently spoken to the takeaway staff during my litter picks around the area. It’s incredibly tragic what has happened.”
