Stranded Isle of Wight Dolphin Put Down After Terrible Injuries
A injured white-beaked dolphin found stranded on an Isle of Wight beach has been put to sleep after a desperate rescue attempt.
Distressing Discovery on Hope Beach
Coastguards were alerted on Thursday afternoon to the struggling dolphin beached near Hope Beach. The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) quickly assessed the animal and found a horrific injury: a badly broken jaw with bones protruding through the skin, missing teeth, and signs of severe malnutrition.
The dolphin’s condition was so dire it could not be returned to the sea. Despite efforts from BDMLR and a local vet, the mammal showed extreme distress and was humanely euthanised.
Complex Rescue Operation in Action
The recovery of the stranded dolphin involved multiple emergency crews working overnight. Bembridge and 1 Coastguard Rescue teams teamed up with Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service to safely remove the animal from the sand.
A specialist aerial ladder platform (ALP), usually used for high-rise rescues and road traffic collisions, was deployed after 5pm to assist the operation. Police officers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight, along with Island Roads, closed a section of Culver Parade during the delicate process.
