Two Teenagers Stabbed in Southend Beach Brawl as Police Crack Down
Large Southend Beach Fight Sparks Police Action
Essex Police have ramped up stop and search powers after a big disturbance on Southend’s Chalkwell Esplanade. Officers were called at 7.05pm on Friday 24 July to reports of a large group fighting, some armed with weapons, near Chalkwell train station.
Police, backed by British Transport Police and a helicopter, quickly arrived on scene. The crowd scattered across the local area, but the violence left two 15-year-old boys injured and rushed to hospital.
Two Teens Hospitalised with Stab Wounds
- One boy suffered head and leg injuries, including a stab wound to the leg.
- The other had a stab wound to his arm.
- Neither teen’s injuries are life-threatening.
Arrests Made as Tensions Rise
An 18-year-old man from Basildon was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and drug possession. A 20-year-old from South Ockendon was also detained over affray. Both remain in police custody for questioning.
Police continue to investigate and are searching for more people involved. Officers will maintain a visible presence in the area to keep residents safe.
Police Use Extra Stop and Search Powers to Tackle Disorder
Under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, Essex Police and British Transport Police now have authority to carry out stop and searches in Chalkwell — no reasonable suspicion needed. The powers cover the railway station, platforms, beach, promenade, bowling green, and now Chalkwell Park.
Chief Inspector Ashley Howard said: “Officers were quickly on scene to deal with the disorder and continue to work through the night. The stop and search powers help prevent further offending and keep people safe. We thank witnesses who’ve helped our enquiries. Anyone with info should contact Southend CID on 101 quoting reference 1144.”
