MP Cleared Over Covid Train Journey Scandal
An MP sparked a police probe after taking a train from London to Glasgow despite testing positive for Covid-19. The incident happened on Tuesday, 29 September 2020.
Police Launch Investigation After Self-Referral
On 1 October, the MP informed Police Scotland she may have broken Covid rules by travelling while infected. The Metropolitan Police and British Transport Police quickly joined forces to investigate. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards was also alerted.
Officers examined CCTV footage, test dates, results, and travel details to verify the MP’s story. They looked into whether she breached Regulation 11(2) of the Health Protection Regulations 2020, which demands self-isolation after a positive test.
Legal Loophole Lets MP Off the Hook
However, experts found the key self-isolation rule only came into force after 28 September. Since the MP’s positive test was taken before 29 September, the regulation did not apply. This meant no offence was committed.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed no further action will be taken. They have passed the case back to Police Scotland for their consideration.
Reminder to Follow Covid Rules
Authorities urged everyone to stick to Covid laws and guidelines. “We continue to urge everyone to abide by all legislation and any relevant guidelines to help protect themselves and others,” they said.
