UK Hits Grim Covid Milestone with Over 50,000 Deaths
The UK has become the first European country to surpass 50,000 Covid-19 deaths within 28 days of testing positive. Government figures reveal a staggering 50,365 fatalities, sparking fury from medical experts who slam the Government’s handling of the crisis.
BMA Blasts Government’s “Poor Preparation”
The British Medical Association (BMA) called the death toll a “terrible indictment” of the Government’s lack of organisation. Dr Chaand Nagpaul, BMA council chairman, expressed outrage:
“This is a point that should never have been reached. In March, Professor Steve Powis promised the death toll could be kept below 20,000 if the public followed lockdown rules. Today’s figure exposes poor preparation, weak infection control, and confusing, late messaging by the Government.”
He warned that as the UK hopes for a vaccine, crucial lessons must be learnt to prevent another health disaster of this scale.
Vaccine Hope and UK-Wide Strategy Talks
Meanwhile, scientists stay optimistic. England’s deputy chief medical officer, Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, hailed the upcoming vaccination programme as “the most important in decades.”
UK officials from all four nations held a virtual summit to unify Covid rules post-lockdown. Senior ministers, including Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland first ministers, and Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove, discussed:
- International travel policies
- Mass testing strategies
- Vaccination priority lists
The Government hopes these weekly talks will streamline the UK’s pandemic response.
Meanwhile in the US: New York Cracks Down Again
Across the pond, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo imposed fresh restrictions to fight a virus surge. Bars, restaurants, and gyms must close on-premises by 10pm, and private parties are limited to 10 guests.
Cuomo warned the state is a “ship on the COVID tide,” blaming late-night socialising for spreading the virus. The crackdown follows similar moves from California and midwestern states.
New York City mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted, “This is our LAST chance to stop a second wave,” as positive tests hit 2.52% city-wide.
