Supermarkets and Banks Clamp Down on No-Mask Shoppers
Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and other big names are cracking down hard on customers ignoring Government mask mandates. Stores nationwide are enforcing a strict No mask, no entry policy as Covid cases surge and the NHS nears breaking point.
Sainsbury’s Tightens Rules, Enforces Household Entry Limits
Sainsbury’s has ramped up safety measures, now letting only one person per household inside. Shoppers face checks before entering to ensure compliance. The government has made wearing face coverings mandatory in indoor public spaces across England since last July.
Face Masks Are Mandatory – No Ifs, No Buts
Confused if you must wear a mask? The answer is clear: yes, and shops can refuse you entry without one. Health Secretary Matt Hancock has backed shop staff fully, saying police can be called if customers refuse to comply.
“Shopkeepers can refuse entry to anyone not wearing a face covering,” Hancock said, adding police action will be a last resort.
Mask Exemptions and Store Support
The Government reminds the public to respect exemptions, which cover hidden conditions such as anxiety, autism, breathing difficulties, dementia, and those relying on lip-reading. Masks must cover nose and mouth in shops, supermarkets, transport hubs, and shopping centres.
Tesco commented:
“We understand some have medical exemptions and ask those customers to use a sunflower lanyard to alert our teams. Our staff are trained to support and allow entry. For those who forget their mask, free disposable ones are available at the door. Our store managers will be present daily to enforce this safety message. This stance is shared by all of the Big Four supermarkets.”
Iceland and Banks Take Different Routes
Iceland stores refuse to put staff in the position of policing masks after reporting 600+ verbal abuses and 30 assaults tied to Covid rules since the pandemic began. Meanwhile, banks are getting tough:
- HSBC warns customers refusing masks could face account closures.
- Nationwide says branches can refuse service to anyone not masked.
- TSB pledges to take “appropriate action” against rule-breakers.
If you want to avoid hassle, wear your mask. Shops and banks mean business — no mask, no entry!
