Girl Dies After Brutal Exorcism Ritual in Sri Lanka
Two women appeared in court on Monday charged over the tragic death of a young girl during an exorcism ritual in Delgoda, a small town 40km northeast of Colombo.
Exorcism Turns Deadly
The suspects—a female exorcist and the girl’s mother—were ordered held until March 12 as the investigation continues. Police said the mother believed her daughter was possessed by a demon and brought her to the exorcist’s home for a ritual to cast out the spirit.
According to police spokesperson Ajith Rohana, the exorcist first anointed the girl with oil, then repeatedly struck her with a cane. When the girl lost consciousness, she was rushed to hospital but later died. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
Exorcist Under Scrutiny
The woman performing the ritual is reportedly known locally for conducting such exorcisms in recent months. Police are now probing whether other victims have suffered abuse under her care.
Warning Over Dangerous Rituals
“We urge the public to be cautious of such services,” said Rohana. “This girl is not the first to die during these rituals.”
The case shines a harsh spotlight on the dangers of unregulated exorcisms and superstitious practices in Sri Lanka’s rural communities.
