A 19-year-old Coldstream Guardsman is among up to four missing British soldiers believed to have secretly travelled to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion, sparking a stern warning from the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

British Troops Banned from Heading to Ukraine

The MoD has issued a strict ban on all service personnel travelling to Ukraine, whether on leave or not. A spokesman said:

“All service personnel are prohibited from travelling to Ukraine until further notice. Personnel travelling to Ukraine will face disciplinary and administrative consequences.”

The MoD refused to comment on individual cases but the warning is clear: soldiers stepping foot in Ukraine risk serious punishment.

Coldstream Guardsman’s Secret Mission

According to The Sun, the teenage Guardsman, stationed at Windsor Barracks, penned a goodbye letter to his parents before buying a ticket to Poland last weekend. His aim? To cross into Ukraine and join the fight.

All UK military advice currently forbids travel to Ukraine. The guidance flags that joining the conflict could break the law and bring prosecution. Plus, Britain has limited consular support on the ground — leaving Brits stranded and vulnerable.

UK Leadership Urges Caution Amid War Fever

While many Britons want to help Ukrainians, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, an ex-Scots Guards soldier, warns of the extreme danger.

“I do not want to see British people killed any more than I want to see Ukrainians dying,” he said.

His stark plea contrasts with Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who said she would “absolutely” support Britons choosing to fight in Ukraine.

Downing Street later walked back Ms Truss’s comments. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:

“The best way we can help Ukraine right now is by ensuring Putin fails. There are a number of ways Brits can show their support. The Ukrainian embassy in London has information on how to help. We fully recognise the strength of feeling, but we currently advise against travel to Ukraine.”

Official Support Focuses on Defence, Not Frontline Fighting

UK defence chiefs are acutely aware of public sympathy for Ukraine’s cause. But the government insists its backing is defensive—bolstering Ukraine’s military capabilities rather than sending Britons to the battlefield.

With tensions high and the conflict raging, the message is loud and clear: British soldiers and civilians must stay away from Ukraine or face grave consequences.
