Admiral of the Fleet Lord Boyce Dies Aged 90
Admiral of the Fleet The Lord Boyce KG GCB OBE DL, former First Sea Lord and top naval chief, passed away on 6 November 2022. A towering figure in the South East, Lord Boyce had served as Lord Warden and Admiral of the Cinque Ports since 2004, as well as Constable of historic Dover Castle.
Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports
Lord Boyce was closely linked to the Cinque Ports – the ancient maritime confederation that includes Dover and Sandwich as Head Ports, with Deal as a Corporate Limb. Walmer Castle, his official residence, stands as a symbol of his role’s prestige. Known as the “cradle of the Royal Navy,” the Cinque Ports have a rich naval heritage.
Tributes Pour In for a Naval Legend
Cllr Conolly said: “Many of us got to know Lord Boyce through his unstinting dedication and service to the Cinque Ports, and his support of the local community, charities and voluntary organisations.”
“As the first naval officer to be Lord Warden since the 17th century, Lord Boyce brought a rare professionalism to the title. His career as a submariner, First Sea Lord, and Chief of Defence Staff made him uniquely suited to the role.”
“He was a true gentleman with a keen interest in local affairs. He will be deeply missed across the district and the wider Cinque Ports community.”
Lord Boyce’s passing marks the end of an era for the Cinque Ports and the Royal Navy alike.
