Toddler Shaken to Death in Southeast London Flat
Scott Coombe brutalised 18-month-old Andrew Cawker over a year after moving in with the boy’s mother, Tamika Beaton, in southeast London. The toddler suffered a fatal head injury after Coombe violently shook and threw him in July 2019.
Mother Suspected Abuse but Did Nothing
Beaton, 25, knew her son was being hurt but failed to step in or get help, the Metropolitan Police revealed. The fatal attack happened while Beaton was at a dance class, leaving Coombe “irritated” at caring for Andrew alone.
“She not only did nothing to protect Andrew from Scott Coombe’s injuries, but she also attempted to cover them up by blaming them on his father, Ben Cawker,” prosecutor Sally O’Neill KC told the court.
Beaton was found guilty of child cruelty and handed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

Police Slam Parents’ Failings
Detective Sergeant Quinn Cutler said: “A defenceless child was subjected to prolonged abuse by those who should have protected him. Andrew should have been safe and loved. Instead, he suffered repeated assaults, culminating in his death.”
He added that Beaton’s refusal to seek help and attempts to cover up the abuse “undoubtedly contributed” to Andrew’s tragic death.
Coombe, from Petts Wood, admitted manslaughter at the Old Bailey in February, while Beaton, of Peckham, was convicted in October after a separate trial.
