Amazon Plans to Shut Three UK Sites Amid Global Job Cuts
Amazon is set to close fulfilment centres in Hemel Hempstead, Doncaster, and Gourock. But there’s a silver lining — all affected staff will be offered roles at other Amazon hubs.
New Jobs in Peddimore and Stockton-on-Tees
The tech giant aims to open new sites in Peddimore, West Midlands, and Stockton-on-Tees, North East. Over the next three years, these centres could create up to 2,500 fresh jobs.
Company Statement on Reshuffle
“We’re always evaluating our network to ensure it meets our business needs and improves the experience for employees and customers,” Amazon told Sky News. “As part of this effort, we may close older sites, upgrade existing facilities, or open new ones. We’ve launched a consultation on the proposed closure of three fulfilment centres in 2023. We also intend to open two new fulfilment centres, creating 2,500 new jobs. All affected employees will have the option to transfer to other facilities. We remain committed to our customers, employees, and communities across the UK.”
Global Job Cuts Hit Amazon
The closures come as Amazon announced it will cut 18,000 jobs worldwide, signalling a major shake-up in the e-commerce giant’s operations.
