Tree surgeons removed a Dutch Elm Disease-infected tree from outside the Eastbourne Heritage Centre, opposite the popular local food and ice cream parlour “Favaloso,” yesterday afternoon (January 23).
East Sussex County Council, which is in charge of managing Dutch elm disease in the county, is currently reviewing a second tree.

Since its arrival in the UK in 1971, Dutch elm disease has killed millions of elm trees. A control zone was established in East Sussex and the surrounding area in 1973 to limit the spread of the disease.
According to East Sussex County Council, Sussex now has the world’s only mature English elm population.
