Blaze Hits Erith Flat: Faulty E-Bike Battery to Blame
A fierce fire ripped through half a flat on Arthur Street, Erith, late Friday night. The blaze, sparked by a faulty e-bike lithium battery, tore through the third floor of a seven-story block.
Before firefighters arrived, a woman and three children escaped the inferno. London Ambulance Service treated them for smoke inhalation and rushed them to hospital.
London Fire Brigade Sounds Alarm on E-Bike Battery Dangers
“We’re seeing a sharp rise in fires linked to e-bikes and e-scooters,” warned a London Fire Brigade spokesperson. “When lithium-ion batteries and chargers fail, it’s with terrifying speed and ferocity.”
They added, “Incorrect chargers and modified e-scooters increase the fire risk. Many incidents stem from devices bought online, with batteries that don’t meet safety standards.”
Top Fire Safety Tips for E-Bike Owners
- Store and charge e-bikes away from your home if possible, such as in a shed or garage.
- If charging indoors, ensure smoke alarms are fitted and exit routes are clear.
- Never charge these devices overnight to respond immediately to any issues.
- Make sure everyone in your household knows how to react if a fire breaks out.
Emergency Responders on the Scene
The Fire Brigade was called at 10.51 p.m. Four engines and around 25 firefighters from Erith, Bexley, and Plumstead stations tackled the fire, which was extinguished by 12.02 a.m.
The blaze is a stark reminder: e-bike battery safety is no joke. Stay alert, charge smart, and keep your home safe.
