Nearly One in Three Brits Brace for a Tight Christmas

Almost one-third of UK adults are set for a frugal festive season, thanks to soaring living costs, a new PwC survey reveals.

Key Christmas Spending Trends

  • 30% to Spend Less: Rising food and energy bills are hitting wallets hard, with 80% blaming these for planned cutbacks. Over 20% cite higher mortgage or rent costs as another strain.
  • Mixed Outlook: Meanwhile, 18% plan to splash out more, while just over half expect to keep their spending steady compared to last year.

Lisa Hooker from PwC said, “Shoppers want to protect spending on family and special occasions but are cautiously starting their Christmas shopping earlier to avoid bigger bills later.”

Despite inflation biting, consumer demand has stayed surprisingly resilient this year. However, recent data shows September spending dipped, possibly due to a warm spell hurting sales of autumn clothes.

Retail giant Tesco remains upbeat about the Christmas trading season, adding a silver lining for industry watchers.

Shock 10% Plunge in Manchester United Shares

Manchester United’s stock tumbled 10% on Monday amid news that billionaire Jim Ratcliffe is eyeing a 25% stake in the club. This move sparks fears Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani could push for a full takeover.

  • Ratcliffe’s Massive Bid: The Ineos boss reportedly offers over $1.5bn for the stake, valuing the club near $6.5bn, excluding $600m in net debt. This eclipses Sheikh Jassim’s full ownership offer.
  • Shareholder Disappointment: Investors hoped for a swift full-club sale, so shares slid sharply on renewed uncertainty.
  • Fan Frustration: Many supporters have long called for fresh ownership amid frustrations with the Glazers’ management.

Ford Calls on Auto Workers to End Strike

Ford’s executive chairman Bill Ford has urged the United Auto Workers union to end their 32-day strike, which is spreading and hitting production hard.

“We can stop this now,” Ford said, pushing for new labour talks. He pointed out competitors like Toyota and Honda are gaining the upper hand during Ford’s prolonged shutdown.

The strike, now affecting Ford’s Kentucky Truck plant, poses growing risks to both the automaker and the wider economy.
