Man Jailed for Life After Brutal Train Knife Murder in Surrey

A man who knifed a father to death just metres away from his teenage son on a Surrey train has been locked up for life. Darren Pencille, 36, viciously stabbed Lee Pomeroy 18 times in the neck and upper body within moments of boarding the train on January 4.

Brutal Stabbing Caught on CCTV

After a heated row sparked by frustration over blocked aisles, the argument escalated quickly. Lee followed Pencille into the next carriage, where threats were exchanged. Pencille ominously warned, “You touch me, you see what happens at the next stop.”

Moments later, CCTV captured Pencille pulling a knife and launching a frenzied 27-second attack on the 51-year-old, who was due to celebrate his birthday the next day. Despite desperate attempts to defend himself, Lee was stabbed 18 times.

Fleeing Killer Caught After Nationwide Manhunt

After the attack, Pencille grabbed his scattered belongings and fled as the train pulled into Clandon Station. He ditched a bloodied hat and jacket while fleeing through fields, then made a string of desperate moves across Surrey and Sussex to evade capture.

  • Called his girlfriend Chelsea Mitchell, who helped him hide.
  • Spent hours plotting their next moves, including researching CCTV and hair clippers to change his appearance.
  • Traveled from Farnham to Frensham Ponds, Chichester, and Bognor Regis looking for a place to hide.

Police arrested Pencille less than 18 hours later at his girlfriend’s flat in Farnham.

Girlfriend Also Jailed for Helping Offender

Mitchell, 28, was sentenced to 28 months behind bars for aiding Pencille’s escape attempts. She searched for news reports about the stabbing and tried to help Pencille alter his look.

Justice Served for Devastated Family

“No argument should ever end with this level of violence,” said Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn from British Transport Police. “Lee was a beloved father, husband, and mentor. His loss leaves a huge hole in his family’s lives.”

“I hope the convictions bring some comfort to Lee’s family. They were incredibly supportive throughout the investigation, which led to Pencille’s swift capture and Mitchell’s prosecution.”

Chief Superintendent Ali Barlow of Surrey Police added: “Our deepest condolences to Lee’s family and friends. We hope today’s verdict offers them some closure after this tragic loss.”

Darren Pencille was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years. The savage attack has left a grieving family searching for peace.
