A harrowing case is set to reach its conclusion today as Olubunmi Abodunde, a jealous and abusive husband, faces sentencing for the murder of his wife in Newmarket.
The tragedy unfolded on November 27 last year when police, who were called to the family home the previous day following a domestic violence incident, found 41-year-old Taiwo Abodunde with her “skull smashed in.” Despite the efforts of authorities, she succumbed to her injuries.
Abodunde, 48, admitted to the murder last month at Ipswich Crown Court, where he initially denied the charge. The court heard that the couple, who moved to the UK from Nigeria in 2022, faced financial strains and marital discord. Abodunde, unable to find work as a civil engineer, held menial jobs while his wife worked as a healthcare assistant nurse.
Allegations of infidelity and recurring domestic violence marked their troubled relationship, leading to a fatal confrontation that ended Taiwo’s life. The court heard disturbing details of the violence inflicted upon her, including strangulation, rib fractures, and a fatal blow with a skateboard.
Despite pleading guilty, Abodunde’s defence cited medication affecting his behaviour and described the level of violence as uncharacteristic. However, prosecutors highlighted the brutality of the attack, suggesting a premeditated act of vengeance.
The sentencing at Ipswich Crown Court today will provide closure to a family torn apart by senseless violence. Detectives continue to seek justice for Taiwo Abodunde, urging anyone with information to come forward.
