Clapham Chemical Attack Suspect Dies by Suicide in Thames

Abdul Ezedi, accused of a shocking chemical attack in Clapham on January 31, ended his own life by drowning in the River Thames. His body was found on February 19 after a lengthy search, with CCTV footage tracking his final movements.

Coroner Confirms Suicide at Chelsea Bridge

Senior Coroner Mary Hassell, at Poplar Coroner’s Court, ruled Ezedi’s death a suicide. She revealed he likely entered the Thames near Chelsea Bridge around 11:30pm the night of the attack.

“It seems likely to me that he drowned almost immediately,” Hassell stated. “There is no evidence to suggest he was pushed or fell accidentally.”

Final Hours Caught on CCTV

Footage shows Ezedi at King’s Cross Underground station shortly after the assault, then walking alone along Upper Thames Street. Authorities spotted no signs of anyone influencing him before his death.

Disturbed Past and Aftermath

  • Ezedi came to the UK hidden in a lorry in 2016.
  • He was refused asylum twice but later won an appeal citing his conversion to Christianity.
  • In 2018, Ezedi was convicted of two sexual offences, sentenced to unpaid work and a suspended sentence.

The attack left the local community and Ezedi’s family reeling. The Metropolitan Police, alongside support groups, now focus on aiding victims’ physical and mental recovery.
