Tragic crash claims life of young police officer on A7 in Scottish Borders
Police are hunting witnesses after a fatal collision on the A7 near Galashiels claimed the life of serving officer PC Rhys Prentice. The smash happened just after 12.25pm on Sunday, 15th July, when Rhys’ Yamaha R6 motorbike, heading south, collided with a silver Peugeot 107 coming from the north.
Young officer dies at scene
Rhys, 24, died instantly at the scene. His family released a heart-wrenching statement through scotland/" title="Police Scotland" data-wpil-monitor-id-removed="280">Police Scotland: “We are absolutely devastated at the loss of Rhys – our much loved son, brother, fiancé and friend. Rhys was an enthusiastic biker and a dedicated police officer. He made us all very proud and words cannot describe how much we will miss him.”
Police and family mourn
Chief Superintendent Lesley Clark of Lothians and Scottish Borders Division paid tribute: “It’s a sad day for the division. Rhys was a popular, devoted officer based in East Lothian and will be deeply missed. Support is being provided for his colleagues. His parents and fiancée were exceptionally proud of his career. Our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this tragic time.”
Injuries and ongoing investigation
- Both occupants of the Peugeot were seriously injured and rushed to Borders General Hospital.
- The A7 was shut both ways for around eight hours while emergency crews worked and police investigated.
- Sergeant Ross Drummond of Dalkeith Road Policing Unit is leading the probe. He urged: “Anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward and help us piece together what happened.”
