60-Year-Old Man Charged with Suffocating Woman in Basildon

Peter Faires, 60, from Staverton Road, Hornchurch, has appeared at Basildon Crown Court accused of suffocating a woman. Speaking via video link from Chelmsford Prison, Faires denied seven serious charges, including a campaign of abuse and intentional suffocation.

Coercive Control and Abuse Allegations

Prosecutors say Faires subjected the woman to weeks of torment, including:

  • Monitoring and tampering with her phone
  • Repeated verbal abuse
  • Isolating her from friends and family

He also faces charges of two counts of assault by beating, three counts of property damage, and one count of intentional suffocation. Faires pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Trial Set for February 2026

Basildon Crown Court has scheduled the trial for late February 2026. The case will shine a light on allegations of coercive control and violent abuse.
