Second Suspect Nabbed Over Mosque Blaze in Peacehaven
Detectives have made a fresh arrest in connection with a chilling arson attack on a mosque in Peacehaven. The blaze, sparked by masked thugs, sent shockwaves through the community.
Masked Men Torch Mosque Door in Dead of Night
Just before 10pm on Saturday, October 4, emergency crews scrambled to Phyllis Avenue after alarms raised over a fire at the local mosque. CCTV captured two masked men, clad in dark gear, drenching the mosque’s front door with accelerant before igniting it.
Quick action from Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue crews put out the flames fast, stopping the fire from spreading inside. Thankfully, no worshippers were hurt during the attack.
Mosque Suffers Major Damage as Police Make Two Arrests
The fire dealt heavy damage to the mosque and a nearby car. Sussex Police arrested a 46-year-old man from Littlehampton on Monday, October 6, charging him with arson with intent to endanger life. He was released on conditional bail.
The very next day, Tuesday evening, officers detained a 25-year-old man with no fixed address on the same arson charges. He remains in custody, with inquiries ongoing.
Police Plea: Speak Up Against Hate Crimes Now
“We believe people in the community know who is behind this appalling, reckless attack,” said Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cullimore. “We urge anyone with information to come forward, quoting Operation Spey.”
Sussex Police Superintendent Rachel Swinney added, “We have zero tolerance for hate crime. Hate has no place in our county. If you witness or experience any hate incidents, please report them.”
Police are calling on locals with any CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell footage or who saw suspicious behaviour in the area to contact them immediately. Help bring these culprits to justice.
