Chaos at HMP Bronzefield: Police Clear Riot After Violent Prison Protest
Surrey Police ended a day of chaos outside HMP Bronzefield in Ashford after a peaceful protest spiralled into violence. Three people were arrested following clashes with officers and prison staff.
Protesters Attempt to Storm Prison
The unrest began early on 17 December when demonstrators gathered peacefully outside the prison at 5.30am. Police left around 9am, but trouble quickly reignited.
Just before 10am, protesters tried to break into restricted prison areas. Police rushed back to help staff oust the intruders and restore order.
Violence Erupts: Staff and Officers Attacked
- One prison worker was assaulted during the scuffle.
- A man was arrested for attacking an emergency services worker.
- A police officer was also assaulted amid the disorder.
- Police vehicle vandalised, leading to a third arrest for criminal damage.
Protesters set up roadblocks, delaying medical aid and disrupting prison transport services. The chaos also hampered wider Surrey policing operations.
Police Crack Down on Disorder
Detective Superintendent Matt Barcraft-Barnes warned: “We support lawful protests, but criminal behaviour and extensive disorder will not be tolerated. It is unacceptable that two emergency services workers were assaulted today.”
All three suspects remain in custody as investigations continue into the full background and consequences of the violent outbreak.
