A student broke her back leaping 10ft from a window in May 2020 to flee Valdo Calocane — three years before he fatally stabbed three people in Nottingham, a chilling public inquiry has revealed.
Student’s Daring Escape from Paranoid Schizophrenic
Feven, just 22 at the time, shattered her vertebrae and needed surgery after jumping from her flat. Calocane, struggling with paranoid schizophrenia, had tried to kick down her door.
Police visited her a week after hospital discharge and praised her bravery. One officer said, “If you hadn’t jumped, many things could have happened – he could have killed or seriously harmed you.”
Missed Warnings: Police Failures Exposed
The inquiry uncovered glaring police errors. Logs never formally linked Calocane’s earlier attack on Feven with the later fatal stabbings. Inspector Katie Eustace, who first arrested Calocane, admitted she “cannot find” the bodycam footage marked for retention.
When asked if the case got the attention it deserved, Eustace bluntly replied: “No, I don’t think it was.”
Deadly Consequences Follow
PC Richard Marsden, who attended Feven’s case, denied telling her “it could have been much worse” but agreed police should have connected the dots sooner.
On 13 June 2023, Calocane stabbed 19-year-old students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar and 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates before attempting to run down pedestrians. He was convicted of manslaughter due to diminished responsibility and given an indefinite hospital order in January 2024.
The ongoing public inquiry into police failings linked to these attacks will publish a full report next year.
