Chaos erupted near the British RAF base in Akrotiri, Cyprus, just after midnight as loud explosions sent shockwaves across the military camp. Around 2,000 personnel and their families were urgently told to shelter indoors, stay clear of windows, and take cover behind sturdy furniture amid fears of an imminent threat.

Missiles or Drones? Mystery Explosions Rock RAF Base

The explosions came shortly after reports that two missiles were launched toward Cyprus but were intercepted or fell short, says UK Defence Secretary John Healey. Although no direct hit was confirmed on RAF Akrotiri, the cause of several nearby blasts remains unclear, raising tensions across the base.

Some witnesses shared unconfirmed footage showing what may have been an intercepted missile or drone crashing on the horizon near the base. Despite the alarm, no casualties or damage at RAF facilities have been reported.

RAF Jets Scramble amid Rising Middle East Tensions

The timing is notably tense, coming hours after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer authorised the US to carry out defensive strikes on Iranian missile sites from UK bases, including the one in Cyprus. The base reportedly serves as a refuelling stop for US and Israeli jets targeting Iran.

Personnel were ordered to “return to your homes and stay inside until further notice,” with thousands taking shelter as flights and sortie jets scrambled to protect the area.

Wider Middle East Conflict Looms

The incident unfolds in the wake of heightened conflict following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, by US-Israeli strikes. Iran has launched missile and suicide drone attacks across the Gulf, targeting allies including Israel, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the UAE, causing multiple casualties and infrastructure damage.

In a chilling statement, Sir Keir stressed the UK’s resolve: “It is my duty to protect British lives.” He confirmed British jets are actively defending regional allies but insisted the UK will not participate in pre-emptive strikes. The US’s use of UK bases for targeted defensive strikes has been granted, a move purportedly in line with international law.

Evacuation Plans Underway for Brits in the Gulf

With Iranian threats escalating, the UK government is preparing to evacuate 94,000 Britons stranded in the Middle East as airspaces close amid ongoing drone attacks. Officials are mobilising counter-drone expertise and collaborating with allies to shield British nationals and interests.

The Defence Secretary warned of the “very real and rising threat” from Iran’s aggressive actions across the region, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated defence.

Full Statement from Sir Keir Starmer

“Yesterday, I spoke about the situation in the Gulf and explained the UK was not involved in the strikes on Iran. That remains the case. Over the last two days, Iran has launched attacks across the region at countries who did not attack them. They’ve targeted airports and hotels with British citizens present.”

“We have at least 200,000 British citizens in the region. I urge everyone to register with the Foreign Office and adhere to travel advice.”

“Our Armed Forces, who are in the region, face increased risk. The US has requested to use British bases for limited defensive operations. We accepted to prevent further missile attacks risking innocent lives.”

“We learned from the mistakes of Iraq. We will not join offensive actions, but we will defend our allies and people. This is our duty to British interests and lives.”

As global tensions simmer, the eyes of NATO, Turkey, and all the world remain sharply focused on Cyprus. Any further escalation could redraw the geopolitical map overnight.
