In a jaw-dropping move, President Emmanuel Macron has unveiled plans to increase France’s nuclear warhead stockpile for the first time since the 1990s. Even more explosive: French nuclear-capable jets could soon be stationed on British soil as part of a new “advanced deterrence” strategy aimed at countering rising threats across Europe.

Macron’s Nuclear Shake-Up

From the heart of France’s top-secret Île Longue submarine base in Brittany, Macron announced a radical shift in France’s nuclear posture. The policy allows French nuclear-armed jets to temporarily deploy across a network of nine European nations, including the UK, Germany, Poland, and Sweden.

Macron called this collective defence network “an archipelago of force” designed to throw off adversaries and complicate their plans. “An upgrade of our arsenal is essential,” he said, confirming an increase from the current estimated 290 warheads — though the final total remains under wraps.

“There will be no sharing of the ultimate decision, its planning, or its implementation,” Macron insisted, stressing France’s sole control over its nuclear arsenal.

UK and France: Nuclear Allies Deepen Ties

Britain, one of the nine signatories, has already taken significant steps towards closer nuclear cooperation with France. British defence officials participated in a French strategic air force exercise this winter—the first such joint drill—marking a milestone in the partnership between Europe’s only two nuclear powers.

This cooperation follows the Northwood Declaration from July 2025, which allows Paris and London’s arsenals to be coordinated without merging command or control.

Europe Teams Up on New Missile Tech

Beyond nuclear weapons, Macron revealed a new trilateral military project with the UK and Germany to develop cutting-edge long-range missile systems, dubbed the European Long-Range Strike Approach (Elsa). This programme targets threats from Russia’s expanding missile technologies amid the collapse of key arms control treaties.

Macron slammed the current international arms control scene as “a field of ruins,” citing the expired INF treaty and New START accord. He also flagged China’s nuclear buildup and nuclear proliferation concerns with Iran and North Korea as looming dangers.

Britain Welcomes the Defence Boost

A UK government spokesman hailed the announcement, affirming the “concrete cooperation measures” agreed through the Northwood Declaration and the recent UK-France summit.

“The UK and France are both resolved to deter threats against Europe and will not be intimidated by Russian nuclear rhetoric,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, France has pledged to deploy anti-missile and anti-drone systems to Cyprus after Iranian-made drones targeted RAF Akrotiri. Full details on how the “advanced deterrence” plan will roll out across Europe are expected soon.
