Work kicks off next week on a brand-new bus and cycle lane designed to boost journey reliability, ramp up road safety, and ease traffic snarls on a key route into Brighton.
Dedicated Lane for Buses, Cyclists, and Taxis
The fresh lane will run southbound along the A23 at Patcham, between Brangwyn Crescent and Brangwyn Drive. Operating 24/7, it will be exclusive to buses, cyclists, and taxis—ditching the old cycle lane for a sleeker, smarter system.
Brighton & Hove City Council assures the road’s width can handle the new lane without chopping existing traffic lanes. That means cars keep flowing freely while buses and cyclists speed past in their own space, slashing congestion and delays.
Safer Streets with Lower Speeds and New Crossing
The overhaul also includes:
- New pedestrian crossing
- Road resurfacing
- Speed limit drop from 40mph to 30mph
These tweaks aim to keep everyone safer—whether on foot, bike, or behind the wheel.
Funding, Timeline, and Local Impact
The Department for Transport backs the project through the council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan. Construction starts Wednesday 18 March and should wrap up in around 10 weeks.
Residents won’t lose access to their homes during the works, though temporary traffic lights may pop up now and then.
“This scheme will help make bus journeys more reliable while improving safety for residents and cyclists,” said Councillor Trevor Muten, cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure.
“With no lanes lost for general traffic, we expect less congestion and better flow on this busy route into the city centre.”
